Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) face off in a high-stakes IPL 2026 league-stage blockbuster at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on May 22, with a top-two finish and a Qualifier 1 berth on the line alongside Gujarat Titans.
Current Standings and Stakes
RCB currently sit at the top of the table with 18 points and a massive net run rate of +1.065. A win guarantees them the No.1 spot and a place in Qualifier 1, while even a narrow defeat could still be enough because of their superior NRR. SRH, meanwhile, are third with 16 points and +0.350 NRR. To break into the top two, they need a dominant win over Bengaluru.
Head-to-Head Record
Historically, SRH hold a slight edge in the rivalry, leading 14-12 in 27 IPL meetings. In Hyderabad, SRH have been particularly dominant, winning six of their nine matches against RCB. However, earlier this season, RCB comfortably chased down 202 against a Pat Cummins-less SRH side in Bengaluru.
Key Player Battles
Several key player battles could shape the outcome. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will target the explosive opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the Powerplay, while Virat Kohli faces a major challenge against returning SRH skipper Pat Cummins. Another crucial matchup will be Heinrich Klaasen against RCB's spin attack led by Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma.
Pitch and Conditions
The Hyderabad pitch is expected to heavily favour batting once again, with several high-scoring games played at the venue this season. SRH also carry a perfect record in night games at home during IPL 2026, making the toss and batting conditions especially significant. Weather conditions are expected to remain clear and hot, with no threat of rain.
Virat Kohli's Milestone Chase
Virat Kohli is currently sixth in the IPL 2026 Orange Cap standings with 542 runs in 13 innings at an impressive average of 54.20 and a strike rate of 164.74. This also marks his fourth consecutive IPL season with 500-plus runs and the ninth overall in his IPL career.
Now, the RCB icon stands just 58 runs away from creating history. Kohli is currently tied with Chris Gayle, David Warner and KL Rahul for the most consecutive IPL seasons with 600-plus runs. Gayle achieved the feat in 2011, 2012, and 2013, David Warner achieved it in 2016, 2017 and 2019 (He was unavailable in 2018) and KL Rahul scored in 2020, 2021 and 2022, while Kohli matched the record with 600-plus campaigns in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
If Kohli scores 58 or more runs against SRH, he will become the first batter in IPL history to register four consecutive seasons with 600-plus runs.
Rajat Patidar's Return
Back in Dharamsala, stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma had hinted that Rajat Patidar would return to action for the Hyderabad clash, and now Royal Challengers Bengaluru Director of Cricket Mo Bobat has officially confirmed the news ahead of the crucial encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
"Rajat is good to go. We were cautious and didn't want to take any risks with him. We felt it was better to give him a little more time to recover and rest, but he's here, he's practicing, and he's ready to play," Bobat said on the eve of the match.
