Sunrisers Hyderabad Hit by Injury Blow Ahead of IPL 2026 Season
In a significant setback for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), their newly acquired player Jack Edwards has been ruled out of the upcoming TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season due to injury. Edwards, who was signed for a substantial Rs 3 crore in the recent mini-auction, will miss the tournament, forcing the franchise to seek a replacement just before their opening fixture.
David Payne Named as Direct Replacement for Injured Edwards
Ahead of their crucial opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28, SRH have moved swiftly to secure England left-arm fast-medium bowler David Payne as Edwards' replacement. Payne has been signed for Rs 1.5 crore and will join the Hyderabad-based squad immediately. This development adds to SRH's early-season challenges, as they are already set to miss regular captain Pat Cummins at the tournament's start, with Ishan Kishan named interim skipper.
Who Is David Payne? A Profile of SRH's New Bowling Asset
David Alan Payne, a 35-year-old English cricketer, brings considerable experience to the Sunrisers Hyderabad lineup. Making his debut for Gloucestershire in 2009, Payne has established himself as a formidable T20 specialist. He has represented England at the Under-19 level in both Test matches and One Day Internationals and was part of the squad for the 2010 U-19 Cricket World Cup.
Payne's international career includes one ODI appearance for England in 2022 against the Netherlands, where he shared the new ball with David Willey and claimed one wicket. However, his true strength lies in the T20 format, where he has amassed an impressive record of 304 wickets from 233 matches.
Payne's Domestic and Franchise Cricket Credentials
The English pacer holds the distinction of being Gloucestershire's leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket. He demonstrated his prowess in the 2024 T20 Blast, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 33 wickets in just 17 innings. Payne has also featured prominently in various global franchise leagues:
- The Hundred: Represented Welsh Fire in the competition.
- Big Bash League (BBL): Played a pivotal role for Perth Scorchers in BBL15 (2025-26), earning Player of the Match honors in the final by taking 3-18 to help secure their sixth title against Sydney Sixers.
- International League T20 (ILT20): Completed two seasons with Desert Vipers, further honing his skills in competitive environments.
Official IPL Statement Confirms Dual Replacements
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL governing council released an official media statement confirming the player replacements for both Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The statement clarified that "KKR and SRH have picked Saurabh Dubey and David Payne respectively as player replacements for TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026."
For KKR, the change was necessitated by the unfortunate injury to Akash Deep, a right-arm pacer who has played 10 Tests for India, taking 28 wickets. Deep has been ruled out due to a lumbar stress injury and is currently under the care of the BCCI Medical Team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru for further management. Left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey will replace him at KKR for INR 30 Lakh.
SRH's Strategic Adjustments and Tournament Outlook
With Payne's inclusion, SRH gain a seasoned T20 campaigner who can provide crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay and death overs. His ability to perform under pressure, evidenced by his BBL final heroics, makes him a valuable asset for the franchise. Meanwhile, Jack Edwards' absence creates an opportunity for other players in the SRH squad to step up and fill the void.
The team management will be hoping that Payne adapts quickly to Indian conditions and forms effective partnerships with the existing bowling unit. As the IPL 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on how SRH navigates these early disruptions and whether their new signing can make an immediate impact in one of cricket's most demanding tournaments.
