Stokes endorses Brook for captaincy

Ben Stokes has given his unequivocal backing to Harry Brook as England's next Test captain, describing the vice-captain as the natural successor following Stokes' retirement from international cricket. Stokes, who stepped down after England's 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand, said there is no reason why Brook should not take over the role.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Stokes highlighted that Brook's appointment as vice-captain was a deliberate move by the team management. "If I was asked who I think should do it, I would be throwing my 100 per cent support behind Harry Brook. There's a reason why he was asked to be vice-captain of this team," Stokes said.

Natural progression for Brook

Stokes drew parallels with his own career, noting that he served as vice-captain under Joe Root before taking over. "You're asked to be vice-captain of a team for a certain reason. I was vice-captain under Joe for a long time. It's the natural progression. If the captain is not there or unavailable, then you step up to be that. There's absolutely no reason why Harry shouldn't be asked to do that," he added.

Brook, 26, has played 25 Tests and scored over 2,200 runs at an average of 58.4, including eight centuries. Stokes described him as "an incredible player, one of the more senior players in this group - we all know he's a phenomenally talented individual when it comes to his skill as a batter."

Stokes' final series ends in defeat

Stokes' international career concluded with a 160-run loss to New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge, giving the visitors a 2-1 series win. It was Stokes' first home series defeat both as a player and as captain. Tom Latham led New Zealand to victory, with the match marking the end of an era for English cricket.

Stokes retires as one of England's greatest all-rounders, having scored 6,543 runs and taken 197 wickets in Tests, and captained the side to a memorable 2023 Ashes draw. His endorsement of Brook is seen as a clear signal to the England selectors ahead of the next Test assignment.
