Suryakumar Yadav's poor form continues in Mumbai T20 League

Suryakumar Yadav's struggles with the bat continued on Tuesday as he managed just 19 runs off 11 balls for Triumph Knights in the T20 Mumbai League, fueling speculation over his retention as India's T20 captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

Match Performance

Playing at the Wankhede Stadium, the 35-year-old captained Triumph Knights in their opening match of Season 4. His team lost by 21 runs against North Mumbai Panthers. Yadav started well, adding 37 runs for the third wicket with youngster Nutan Goel, who played a brilliant innings of 93 off 56 balls. However, Yadav was caught at deep square leg off spinner Rahul Sawant in the seventh over. Sawant finished with figures of 2 for 32 in four overs.

Chasing a target of 189, Triumph Knights were restricted to 188 for 8.

Recent Form Concerns

Yadav's poor form is not limited to this match. Despite leading India to their second consecutive T20 World Cup title in February-March, he had an ordinary tournament, scoring only 242 runs in nine matches at an average of 30.25, with a highest score of 84 not out against the USA in the opening match at Wankhede.

His fortunes did not improve in IPL 2026, where he scored just 260 runs in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54, with only two half-centuries. Mumbai Indians crashed out in the league stage.

Upcoming International Commitments

India are scheduled to play two T20 Internationals against Ireland later this month in Belfast. The first T20I is on June 26, followed by the second on June 28. There is also a tour of England on the horizon, adding to the uncertainty over Yadav's captaincy.
