US Soccer is set to hold talks with head coach Mauricio Pochettino regarding his future with the men's national team after the co-hosts were eliminated from the ongoing FIFA World Cup with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16 in Seattle.
Pochettino's Contract and Speculation
The 54-year-old Argentine coach's contract with US Soccer expires after the tournament. Following the disappointing early exit, speculation has intensified about whether he will continue leading the side. The US had high hopes of advancing deep into the competition on home soil.
Disappointing Campaign Despite Controversial Red Card Reversal
Despite the reinstatement of star player Flo Balogun after his red card was controversially overturned by FIFA, the US struggled against Belgium. Romelu Lukaku and Charles De Ketelaere were among the standout performers for the Belgian side, sealing a decisive victory.
US Soccer Statement on Positive Conversations
According to Reuters, the federation stated that it has held "positive conversations" about the tournament run. Both parties have agreed to discuss the future direction of US Soccer regarding the head coach position. "We have a great deal of respect and gratitude for Mauricio, his staff and everyone part of the program," US Soccer said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by Reuters.
Pochettino's Appointment and Future Outlook
US Soccer hired Pochettino in September 2024, bringing in the former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris St Germain, and Chelsea manager with the aim of transforming the team into serious World Cup contenders. However, the manner of the loss to Belgium leaves the federation with a difficult assessment: whether Pochettino is the right person to lead the team into the next cycle leading up to the 2030 World Cup.
