Vaibhav Sooryavanshi creates history with T20I debut at age 15

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his T20I debut for India against England on July 4, 2026, at the age of 15 years, becoming the youngest ever to play a T20I match and the youngest to represent India in international cricket. The milestone occurred during the ongoing series between India and England.

Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the playing XI was confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier in the day. He broke the previous record held by Afghanistan's Qais Ahmad, who debuted at 16 years and 42 days in 2017. For India, the previous youngest debutant in T20Is was Ravi Bishnoi, who played his first match at 20 years and 72 days in 2021.

Record-breaking feat in international cricket

At 15 years, Sooryavanshi is not only the youngest T20I player but also the youngest to play any format of international cricket for India. The previous youngest Indian international was Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted in Test cricket at 16 years and 205 days in 1989. Sooryavanshi's debut surpasses that by over a year.

According to BCCI sources, Sooryavanshi's selection was based on his exceptional performances in domestic T20 tournaments and age-group cricket. He had scored over 500 runs in the recent Under-19 domestic season at a strike rate of 145.

Match context and impact

The T20I match against England was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India won the toss and elected to bat first. Sooryavanshi opened the batting alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav. He scored 12 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Jofra Archer. His innings included two boundaries.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah said, "Vaibhav's debut is a proud moment for Indian cricket. His talent and maturity at such a young age are remarkable. We are confident he has a bright future."

The record for the youngest T20I debutant globally is held by Nepal's Rohit Paudel, who debuted at 14 years and 178 days in 2018. Sooryavanshi is now the second youngest overall.
