Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old left-handed opener from Bihar, announced his arrival on the international stage with a breathtaking 94 off just 46 balls against Australia U19 in the first Youth Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In doing so, he became the youngest cricketer ever to score a fifty in a U19 Test match, surpassing the previous record held by England's Jack Leaning.
Record-Breaking Innings
Suryavanshi's innings was a whirlwind of aggression, featuring 11 fours and 5 sixes. He reached his fifty in just 29 balls, the fastest fifty by an Indian in U19 Tests. His knock helped India U19 post a formidable total of 320 for 8 declared in their first innings. The young prodigy was eventually dismissed by Australian spinner Harkirat Bajwa, but not before he had etched his name in the record books.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Suryavanshi is the youngest Indian to play a U19 Test, making his debut at the age of 14 years and 287 days. He is also the fourth-youngest overall in the history of U19 Tests.
Comparison with Sachin Tendulkar
Suryavanshi's feat has drawn comparisons with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who was also a child prodigy. Tendulkar made his first-class debut at 15 and his Test debut at 16. While Suryavanshi still has a long way to go, his early exploits have generated immense excitement in Indian cricket circles.
"He has a very bright future. His temperament and shot selection are remarkable for his age," said India U19 coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar. "He is a special talent, and we are nurturing him carefully."
Match Situation
At stumps on Day 1, Australia U19 were 45 for 2 in reply, trailing by 275 runs. Pacers Naman Tiwari and Yudhajit Guha took a wicket each for India. The match is being played as part of the two-match series between the two sides.
Suryavanshi's innings has also been praised by former India cricketers. "What a knock! This kid is something special. He plays with such freedom and confidence," tweeted Virender Sehwag.
