WPL 2025 Gets a New Winter Slot and Dual Cities
The much-anticipated fourth season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) is set for a significant change, moving from its traditional February-March window to a January start. The action will unfold across two Indian cities, Navi Mumbai and Vadodara, beginning on January 9.
A Caravan Model and the Final Showdown
The tournament will adopt a caravan format, ensuring a concentrated burst of cricketing excitement. The first leg of the competition will be hosted at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, a venue with recent glory as the site of India's women's ODI World Cup victory. Following the initial phase, the league will pack its bags and move to Vadodara for the grand finale, which is scheduled for February 5.
This strategic scheduling was officially confirmed by WPL Chairperson Jayesh George during the recent WPL auction. The shift in the calendar is a deliberate move to prevent a clash with the men's ICC T20 World Cup, which is set to commence shortly after the WPL concludes in early February.
Reigning Champions and Future Implications
Defending champions Mumbai Indians will enter the fray, aiming to add another title to their name in this young, three-season-old league. The new timing and venue strategy not only carve out a dedicated spotlight for women's cricket but also demonstrate the league's adaptability and growing stature within the international cricketing calendar.
