AIFF Imposes Strict Penalties on Mohun Bagan for Pyrotechnics Violations

The All India Football Federation's (AIFF) disciplinary committee has taken decisive action against Mohun Bagan Super Giants (MBSG), imposing a significant fine and ordering a full stadium closure of the Salt Lake Stadium. This penalty stems from multiple instances of pyrotechnics use during the season opener against Kerala Blasters on February 14, 2026.

Stadium Closure and Financial Penalty Enforced

As a direct consequence of this ruling, MBSG will play their upcoming home game against Odisha FC on March 5, 2026, at an empty Salt Lake Stadium. The AIFF disciplinary committee cited this as another case of spectator misconduct, noting that the club had previously received a warning and a suspended one-year sanction in April 2025. At that time, Mohun Bagan fans were found guilty of launching fireworks during a home match against Bengaluru FC on April 12, 2025.

The committee emphasized that this repeat offense warranted harsh punishment, as per their earlier warning. Following the latest infraction, MBSG was formally notified on February 16 and given until February 21 to submit a written reply. After reviewing both written and oral submissions, the Disciplinary Committee concluded on February 28 that the club had violated Article 67 of the AIFF Code, in conjunction with Rules 7.3.8 and 7.5.4 of the Indian Super League 2025-26 League Rules.

Club's Response and Appeal Process

In response, Mohun Bagan Super Giants have accepted the financial penalty but are contesting the stadium ban. The club issued a statement expressing deep disappointment, arguing that the full closure unfairly penalizes thousands of passionate, law-abiding supporters. "Football belongs to the fans. They deserve better," the statement read, highlighting that the appeal to reconsider the ban was made in the interest of their fanbase.

AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan clarified the appeal procedure, stating, "As per Article 117 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code, 2024, any party that feels aggrieved by a decision of the AIFF Disciplinary Committee has the right to appeal to the AIFF Appeal Committee. Such an appeal must be filed in accordance with the procedural rules laid down in the Code."

He further noted that Mohun Bagan had sent an email requesting the stadium ban be lifted, but stressed that "it needs to come through proper channels and procedure as per the provisions of the AIFF Disciplinary Code, 2024." Satyanarayan added, "Fans are one of the key stakeholders of the game, and we appreciate their contribution. However, at the same time, the security and safety of everyone in the stadium is of paramount importance, and it is something that all parties need to ensure."

Current Standings and Broader Context

Despite this disciplinary setback, Mohun Bagan Super Giants continue to lead the ISL standings with three wins in three matches, holding the top position ahead of Jamshedpur FC on goal difference. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in balancing fan enthusiasm with stadium safety protocols in Indian football.

The AIFF's firm stance reflects a broader commitment to enforcing regulations and maintaining order during matches, setting a precedent for how similar violations might be handled in the future. As the appeal process unfolds, the football community will be watching closely to see how this conflict between disciplinary measures and fan engagement is resolved.
