AIFF Extends Camp Invitation to Bolivian Defender Abneet Bharti
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has formally invited Abneet Bharti, a defender currently playing for Academia del Balompie Boliviano in Bolivia's top division, to join the Indian national team's preparatory camp in Kochi. However, his immediate inclusion in the squad for the upcoming match against Hong Kong on March 31 appears unlikely at this stage.
Eligibility Hinges on FIFA Clearance Due to Birth Circumstances
A senior AIFF official clarified the procedural hurdle, stating, "Bharti is born in Nepal, and although he holds an Indian passport, we will require FIFA clearance for him to be eligible to represent the national team." The federation has called the 27-year-old to the camp primarily for head coach Khalid Jamil to conduct a firsthand assessment of his abilities and determine if he fits into the team's tactical framework.
This marks Bharti's second invitation to a senior national camp. He was previously called up for India's away fixture against Bangladesh last year but could not attend due to club commitments in Bolivia and the extensive travel time involved.
Bharti's Football Journey and Potential Role
Abneet Bharti has been a consistent performer in the Bolivian top flight for the past two seasons. His footballing education began in youth academies in Singapore before he moved to Spain for a stint with Real Valladolid. His professional career also includes playing for Czech side FK Varnsdorf. A previous attempt to join the Indian Super League with Kerala Blasters did not materialize.
Should he receive the necessary clearance and impress Coach Jamil, Bharti could become a significant addition to India's central defensive options, providing depth behind established starters Anwar Ali and Sandesh Jhingan.
Australian-Born Winger Ryan Williams Poised for Emotional Debut
In other squad news, Coach Khalid Jamil's 23-member probables list includes Bengaluru FC winger Ryan Williams. The Australian-born player, who obtained an Indian passport last year, is set to make his national team debut against Hong Kong, provided he remains fit.
For Williams, this represents a profound homecoming. His mother was born into an Anglo-Indian family in Mumbai, and his maternal grandfather, Lincoln Eric Grostate, was a reputed footballer who played for Tatas and represented Bombay in the Santosh Trophy national championship in 1956.
Expressing his sentiments in a prior interview, Williams said, "When I put on the India jersey, I'll give everything for the country, everything for the team, everything for the fans. It would be quite difficult to put that feeling into words, but there's going to be joy. It will be quite emotional."
India's Current Standing in AFC Asian Cup Qualification
The national team finds itself in a challenging position, having been eliminated from the race to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2027. Despite entering their qualification group as the highest-ranked team, India has failed to secure a victory in five matches and is destined to finish at the bottom of the group table.
