Dempo Sports Club Seeks First Victory in Indian Football League Away Game
Panaji-based Dempo Sports Club, the five-time national champions, are determined to strengthen their performance with each match as their international signings continue to adapt to the team's dynamics. The club launched their Indian Football League (IFL) campaign with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Real Kashmir FC at home, showcasing early promise despite integration challenges.
Team Building and Foreign Player Integration
Head coach Samir Naik emphasized that the squad is gradually coming together, even with limited preparation time due to late arrivals of some players. "The team is developing well. We faced constraints in training as a full unit initially, but the mutual understanding among players is enhancing, and their dedication is evident," Samir stated during a pre-match media briefing.
In their opening fixture, new acquisitions Aubin Kouakou, Sebastian Gutierrez, and Richmond Kwasi Owusu featured in the starting lineup alongside Marcus Joseph, the club's leading scorer from the previous season. Marcus, a striker from Trinidad and Tobago, netted a penalty to open his account, while Aubin scored with a header to put Dempo ahead before Real Kashmir equalized.
Upcoming Challenge Against Diamond Harbour FC
On Sunday, Dempo will play their first away game of the season against debutants Diamond Harbour FC in Kolkata, aiming to secure three crucial points. Samir acknowledged the toughness of the encounter, noting, "Football offers no easy matches. Diamond Harbour has maintained squad consistency, and their coach, Kibu Vicuna, possesses extensive knowledge of Indian football. We anticipate a highly competitive contest."
Diamond Harbour, the unstoppable champions of the Second Division I-League, are considered one of the stronger teams in the competition. They are looking to recover from a narrow loss to Sreenidi Deccan in their opening game. Dempo's defense will need to closely monitor Diamond Harbour's attacking trio—Jobby Justin, Bryce Miranda, and Slovenian forward Luka Majcen—all of whom have established reputations in India's top football tier.
Motivation and Season Outlook
Forward Marcus Joseph expressed the team's motivation to build on their initial performance as the IFL season progresses. "Despite the delayed season start and the rapid adjustment required from many players, the group remains focused and prepared for the upcoming match. We are in good shape, and the players are committed to delivering their best," Marcus affirmed.
As Dempo Sports Club continues to refine their strategy and player coordination, their clash with Diamond Harbour FC represents a pivotal opportunity to claim their first victory and gain momentum in the league standings.
