FanCode's Digital Strategy for ISL: Fan Content & Multi-Language

FanCode's Ambitious Digital Overhaul for the Indian Super League

In a bold move following their acquisition of exclusive broadcast rights for the Indian Super League (ISL), FanCode faced a daunting challenge. With merely a dozen days remaining before the kickoff of India's premier football competition, the digital-first platform embarked on a mission to redefine how the league is presented to fans across the nation.

Understanding Club Needs and Fan Engagement

Rather than succumbing to pressure, FanCode's leadership took a proactive approach. Co-founder Yannick Colaco, speaking from Mumbai, revealed that the initial days were dedicated to intensive consultations with all ISL clubs. The goal was to identify pain points, gather insights, and comprehend the dynamics of fan club interactions.

"For the first few days, we met all ISL clubs individually to understand their pain points, get insights and understand how they worked with their fan clubs," Colaco explained. "One of the things you'll see is that we are going to be a lot more liberal in content on social media and club platforms."

Colaco emphasized that FanCode's core philosophy revolves around being a digital-native platform. The focus is squarely on connecting with and engaging young consumers through digital channels they are already comfortable using. This strategic pivot marks a significant departure from traditional sports broadcasting models.

Innovative Fan-Centric Content Creation

FanCode has successfully onboarded ISL clubs for what they term "digital-first content." According to Colaco, the company is "looking at content in a slightly different way, not the traditional coverage, something the young audiences don't necessarily identify with."

The platform has launched an innovative program called Vox Up ISL, which has already secured participation from prominent clubs including:

  • Kerala Blasters
  • SC Delhi
  • FC Goa
  • NorthEast United
  • Mumbai City
  • Jamshedpur FC
  • Bengaluru FC

This groundbreaking initiative involves selecting one super fan from each club to serve as their official digital creator. These chosen fans will enjoy unprecedented access, traveling with the team on the club bus and creating authentic content from an insider's perspective.

"We are going to work with each club to run a selection process and nominate one fan who will be their digital creator," Colaco detailed. "The fan will be on the club bus, travel with the team, and create content. They can give it to us and we will package it. We want to present the clubs and their football from the perspective of people who love it the most."

Multi-Language Commentary and Broadcast Expansion

Recognizing India's linguistic diversity, FanCode has committed to providing ISL commentary in multiple languages. The primary focus will be on English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Bengali, with Tamil commentary specifically for matches involving former champions Chennaiyin FC.

"It's important to connect with fans and tell stories in a language the fans are comfortable with," Colaco stressed, highlighting the platform's commitment to inclusive broadcasting.

On the television front, FanCode has been engaged in advanced negotiations with multiple channels for ISL broadcast rights. An announcement regarding the television partner is expected within the next 24 hours.

"We are a digital first platform, so our focus is always on digital," Colaco acknowledged. "The ISL has viewers who consume on television. The traditional sponsors want games on TV too. We've been very open and tried to find the best partner, who provides reach and promotes to raise the level of ISL."

The co-founder revealed substantial interest from various broadcasters, including regional partners. For international distribution, FanCode is working with potential partners across multiple markets including the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. These discussions are progressing and likely to be finalized within 24 to 48 hours.
