FC Goa Coach Manolo Marquez Questions ISL Clubs' Salary Cut Policies Amid Foreign Additions
Panaji: In a candid revelation, FC Goa's experienced coach Manolo Marquez has voiced his bewilderment over the contradictory actions of Indian Super League (ISL) clubs this season. Marquez pointed out the irony of clubs asking players to accept salary reductions while simultaneously making new foreign signings, a move he deems disrespectful to the entire football community.
Foreign Player Exodus and Squad Vulnerability
The uncertainty surrounding Indian football has led to a significant shake-up at FC Goa, with four of their six foreign players departing to pursue opportunities abroad. This exodus includes key figures such as David Timor and Borja Herrera in midfield, and attackers Iker Guarrotxena and Javier Siverio, leaving the team notably weaker than at the start of the season when they competed in the AFC Champions League Two.
"When you ask players to reduce salary and suddenly sign four-five new foreigners, I think it's disrespectful to everyone," Marquez stated during a training session at the Atal Stadium in Bambolim. He emphasized that any salary deductions should be applied equally to all players, regardless of nationality, a principle FC Goa adhered to.
Commitment to Internal Unity Over External Additions
Despite the setbacks, Marquez remains unfazed and is placing his trust in the remaining foreign players, Serbian winger Dejan Drazic and Spanish defender Pol Moreno. "I am very happy that they are here. Dejan is a Serbian, but he's more Indian now. He knows Goa better than most players and he's always with the Indian players. Pol has his family here and he's more settled," he remarked.
The coach highlighted the team's cohesion and discipline as their primary strengths. "The group is close. We are enjoying the training sessions. Maybe we have lost some quality, but the group is disciplined. We are not playing fantastic football, but we are a difficult team to beat," Marquez added, underscoring the collective spirit over individual talent.
Promoting Youth and Facing Challenges Ahead
With only two foreign players on their roster, FC Goa will have one of the smallest contingents of internationals in the league, alongside Mohammedan Sporting and Odisha FC. In response, the club has promoted five players from their developmental side: Sitroy Carvalho, Malsawmtlunga, Vellington Fernandes, Jovial Dias, and Lionel Rymmei, who are eager to prove their mettle.
Marquez views this as a unique opportunity for growth. "I have a lot of hope that we will have a good season, with a lot of young guys, a lot of players who want to show their level. It's a nice challenge for all of us," he expressed. The team's focus is now on their opening match against Inter Kashi, with Marquez dreaming of strong fan support at Fatorda Stadium.
Broader ISL Context and Season Outlook
This season's ISL, featuring a single-leg home and away format with just 13 matches, kicks off with a clash between defending champions Mohun Bagan SG and Kerala Blasters FC. For FC Goa, who have already secured qualification for next season's AFC Champions League Two playoff, the reduced pressure might work in their favor as they navigate a competitive landscape.
Marquez concluded by reaffirming his faith in the club's structure, stating, "In my opinion, FC Goa is the club with the best organisation in the country." As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how this resilient squad adapts to the challenges posed by a league dominated by teams with more foreign talent.
