Mohun Bagan Super Giant Kick Off ISL Title Defense with Commanding Victory
In a dominant display at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharathi Krirangan (VYBK), the defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant commenced their Indian Super League 2025-26 campaign with a resounding 2-0 triumph over Kerala Blasters FC. The season opener saw the Mariners secure three crucial points through a first-half strike from Jamie Maclaren and a late injury-time goal by Tom Aldred, setting a strong tone for their title defense.
Strong Lineup and Tactical Setup Under New Coach
Head coach Sergio Lobera, in his inaugural match at the helm of Mohun Bagan, fielded a formidable starting eleven featuring key players such as Dimi Petratos, Jamie Maclaren, and Alberto Rodriguez. The lineup also included new signings Mehtab Singh, Robson Da Silva, and Amey Ranawade, who were part of the match day squad, adding fresh energy to the team's dynamics.
On the opposing side, Kerala Blasters' coach David Catala opted for a youthful lineup in his first ISL match, with foreign recruits Oumar Ba and Victor Bertomeu making their debuts. Midfielders Y Ebindas and Rowllin Borges were also featured, as per an official ISL press release, highlighting a strategy focused on developing young talent.
First-Half Dominance and Opening Goal
The Mariners asserted control from the outset, enjoying superior possession in the first half. Midfield maestros Anirudh Thapa and Lalengmawia Ralte (Apuia) orchestrated play effectively, creating opportunities for wingers Robson Da Silva and Liston Colaco to exploit spaces. Dimi Petratos, operating in his preferred No. 10 role behind striker Jamie Maclaren, nearly gave Mohun Bagan an early lead, but his shot from a Colaco pass went wide.
Despite dominating possession, Mohun Bagan faced a resilient Kerala Blasters defense that proved difficult to penetrate. However, the breakthrough came after the water break when Petratos found Maclaren inside the box. The Australian striker skillfully turned defender Aiban Dohling and slotted home a composed left-footed finish, marking the first goal of the ISL season and giving his side a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Mariners ended the half with ten shots, six on target, underscoring their offensive prowess.
Second-Half Control and Sealing the Win
The second half saw tactical adjustments, with Catala making two substitutions for Kerala Blasters, bringing in Naocha Singh and Marlon Trujillo. Mohun Bagan responded by replacing Subhasish Bose with Amey Ranawade. The Mariners continued to dictate play, maintaining possession for extended periods and forcing the Blasters to defend deep in their own half.
Kerala Blasters showed signs of resurgence in the final quarter, particularly after the introduction of Kevin Yoke, whose pace and dribbling skills posed threats on the wings. However, they failed to create clear-cut chances to test goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. Mohun Bagan sealed the victory in injury time when substitute Tom Aldred powered a header past goalkeeper Sachin Suresh from Anirudh Thapa's free-kick, making it 2-0 and putting the game beyond reach.
Post-Match Recognition and Looking Ahead
Jamie Maclaren was deservedly named Player of the Match for his decisive goal and overall contribution. This victory not only gives Mohun Bagan a perfect start to the season but also sends a strong message to their rivals in the league. With a blend of experienced stars and new signings, the Mariners appear well-positioned to mount a serious challenge for the ISL title once again.
