Australia's Junior Hockey World Cup Dream Ends in Chennai Despite 3-1 Win Over South Korea
Australia Exits Junior Hockey World Cup in Chennai

The Australian men's junior hockey team saw their FIH Junior World Cup campaign come to a heartbreaking end in Chennai on Tuesday. Despite securing a crucial 3-1 victory against South Korea in their final Group F match, the win was not enough to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive.

A Victory That Wasn't Enough

Entering the match, the Australian side knew only a substantial win could propel them into the knockout stages. Their target was to improve their goal difference sufficiently to rank among the best second-placed teams across all pools. The 3-1 result, however, left them short of the required margin, mathematically confirming their exit from the tournament.

The team's fate was largely sealed by a disastrous previous match against France. That encounter ended in a heavy 3-8 defeat, a result that critically derailed their campaign. In a desperate attempt to salvage the game while trailing 3-5, Australia's coaching staff made the bold decision to remove their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player. This high-risk gamble backfired spectacularly, allowing France to capitalise and pile on late goals.

Coach Stacy Reflects on Campaign's Downfall

Australia's head coach, Jay Stacy, pinpointed the France match as the turning point. "The match against France did not go the way we expected, and those last few goals hurt us," he stated in the aftermath of their elimination. The exit is particularly bitter for a team that arrived in India with confidence, having clinched the prestigious Sultan of Johor Cup title just in October.

Stacy also highlighted structural challenges facing the junior programme. "We have a good pathway programme in Australia, but we do not get to play many matches, and we did not train before coming to Chennai," he explained. He further noted a disparity in team composition, revealing, "At the Johor Cup, it was a different team compared to the one that toured Europe in July." Australia's wait for a podium finish at the Junior World Cup continues; their last medal came way back in 2009.

Other Pool Results and Quarterfinalists

In other key matches from the group stages, France, who had earlier stunned Australia, secured a 3-2 win against Bangladesh. This result confirmed them as the toppers of Pool F, earning a direct berth to the last-eight stage. France were the runners-up in the previous edition of the tournament.

Over in Madurai, the Netherlands showcased their dominance with an 11-0 thrashing of Austria to finish atop Pool E. In the same pool, Belgium defeated Egypt 10-0 to finish with six points. Alongside New Zealand (seven points), Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals as one of the two best second-placed teams from across the pools.
