The organizers of the Chenanda Hockey Festival have announced ambitious expectations for the upcoming Chenanda Hockey Namme 2026, projecting registrations from more than 400 teams. This prestigious tournament is scheduled to take place across four grounds in Napoklu, commencing on April 5, 2026.
Registration Process and Participation Details
The registration process for the hockey tournament has officially begun, with organizers anticipating the involvement of over 400 Kodava families. Notably, at least 200 women's teams are expected to participate, highlighting the event's commitment to gender inclusivity in sports.
Speaking to reporters in Madikeri, Chenanda Hockey Fest secretary CS Madhu Madaiah provided insights into the preparations. "Preparations at the three grounds are in full swing, and the fourth ground is being readied by the Kundyolanda family," he stated. Registration can be completed at 33 centers distributed across the district or conveniently through online platforms. Madaiah extended an invitation to all Kodava families to join the tournament, emphasizing community engagement.
Event Schedule and Distinguished Guests
The inaugural ceremony is confirmed for April 5 in Napoklu, with the valedictory ceremony set for May 2. The closing event will feature prominent figures, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, underscoring the tournament's significance at both state and national levels.
Additionally, the festival will honor renowned tennis player and Padma Shri awardee Rohan Bopanna of Kokeri, adding a celebratory element to the sports gathering.
Youth Development and Training Initiatives
In a move to foster young talent, a hockey tournament was organized in early January for primary and high school boys and girls from the Kodava community in Murnad. From this event, 24 promising hockey players aged 10 to 15 were selected. These selected athletes will undergo specialized training by skilled hockey players in Napoklu for approximately one month, starting March 25, aimed at nurturing future sports stars.
The Chenanda Hockey Festival 2026 promises to be a landmark event, combining competitive sports with community spirit and youth development, set against the backdrop of Kodava cultural heritage.
