Kuljit Singh Bamrah, the head coach at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy in Amritsar, has been instrumental in shaping generations of hockey players over the past two decades. The academy, a residential training centre, has produced three Olympians—Ramandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh, and Dilpreet Singh—and over 240 national players since its inception in 2005. Bamrah joined as a junior coach on April 1, 2006, and is affectionately called 'Baba' by his trainees.
Academy's Impact on Indian Hockey
The academy's alumni include Araijeet Singh Hundal, a key member of the Indian team that won the Asian Champions Trophy in China in 2024. Other international players from the academy include Lovedeep Singh and Gurjant Singh. Several former trainees now play for foreign clubs in Canada, Australia, the USA, Hong Kong, and Portugal, such as Harsahib Singh, Ravisher Singh, Bikramjit Singh, Harmandeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Harshdeep Singh, Amritpal Singh, Sukhdeep Singh, Lovedeep Singh, and Mandeep Singh.
Bamrah's Personal Journey
Bamrah's path to hockey was marked by personal tragedy. His father, Paramjit Singh, a furniture shop owner, died of a suspected heart condition in 1979 when Bamrah was three. His mother, Manjit Kaur Bamrah, who held an MA in English and Hindi, raised him and his brother while teaching at a school. She passed away in 1989 after being deeply affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, during which her father's property in Madhya Pradesh was destroyed. Subsequently, their aunt Kulwant Kaur took care of the siblings.
Early Hockey Career
Bamrah developed an interest in hockey at Khalsa College Senior Secondary School, from which he graduated in 1995. He was selected for the Sports Wing in Tanda in 1990 and trained there for three years. He played for the state hockey team from 1985 to 1994 and was part of the Amritsar team that won the Punjab State Hockey Championship in 1993 after a 30-year gap. He participated in prestigious tournaments like the Nehru Hockey Tournament, Surjit Hockey Tournament, Baba Farid Gold Cup, and the Liberals Hockey Tournament in Nabha.
Education and Coaching Career
Bamrah graduated from Khalsa College and earned a Diploma in Physical Education from Patiala. He also completed a certification course at the National Institute of Sports at Banaras Hindu University. Since April 1, 2009, he has been the head hockey coach at Spring Dale Senior School.
Recognition and Awards
Bamrah has received several accolades, including the Best Coach Award from the Nehru Hockey Society in New Delhi, recognition from Fit India, and the Best Teacher (Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan) Award from the Spring Dale Educational Society.
