The talented dragflicker is competing in the men's Junior Hockey World Cup in Madurai, but this tournament marks the end of his hockey journey rather than the beginning.

Jaydon Brooker has confirmed that this international hockey tournament will be his last as he prepares to transition fully to professional cricket. The 20-year-old made his first-class cricket debut for Potchefstroom-based team North West and now faces the bittersweet reality of ending one sporting chapter to begin another.
"I am still playing both sports very actively, but after the tournament, I will take the cricketing route," Brooker told Times of India from Madurai. "I am enjoying my final international hockey tournament, and from next year, I will focus on my cricket career."
A Family Legacy and Famous Precedent
Brooker's story echoes that of legendary South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, who also began his sporting career in hockey before switching to cricket. Rhodes famously used his hockey reflexes to become one of the greatest fielders in cricket history during the 1990s and 2000s.
The sporting tradition runs deep in Brooker's family. His uncle, Finley Brooker, played 55 first-class matches for Griqualand West. Brooker himself first picked up hockey before taking up cricket at age nine, following the family's hockey tradition while developing parallel skills in cricket.

In 2017, Brooker's hockey talent earned him a scholarship to Jeppe High School in Johannesburg, the city's oldest public school with a rich cricketing tradition. There, he balanced both sports, representing the school's U-14 cricket team while continuing to excel in hockey.
Brooker also featured in the 2023 edition of the Junior Hockey World Cup, giving him valuable international experience in both sports. His journey reflects the difficult choices many young athletes face when talented in multiple disciplines.
