Odisha Youngsters Roshan Kujur and Amandeep Lakra Earn Maiden Senior India Hockey Call-Ups
In a strategic move by head coach Craig Fulton, the Indian men's hockey team has announced a 24-member squad for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches in Rourkela, with a notable focus on squad depth during this busy season. The selection, revealed in New Delhi on Thursday, marks the maiden senior team call-ups for Odisha talents Roshan Kujur and Amandeep Lakra, highlighting Fulton's commitment to integrating fresh talent.
Breakthrough Performances in Domestic Hockey
Amandeep Lakra, who was named the Hockey India League (HIL) Player-of-the-Tournament, has emerged as a key dragflicker this season. His aggressive and improved performance for Hyderabad Toofans, where he scored nine goals from penalty corners in just 10 games, caught Fulton's attention. Lakra's defensive prowess and set-piece expertise make him a valuable addition to the team's backline.
Roshan Kujur, aged 21, brings international junior experience to the squad. He was part of the Indian junior team that secured a bronze medal at the FIH Junior World Cup 2025 in Chennai. Kujur also enjoyed a breakthrough domestic season, playing a pivotal role for the eventual HIL champions, Kalinga Lancers, showcasing his skills in the midfield.
Youth and Experience Blend for Major Tournaments
The inclusion of Kujur and Lakra is part of Fulton's broader strategy to increase options and inject young blood into the team. The Odisha duo will aim to replicate their HIL form at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela, where India is set to face heavyweights Argentina and Belgium from February 10 to 15. These matches serve as a crucial warm-up event ahead of two major tournaments later in the year: the Hockey World Cup from August 14 to 30 and the Asian Games from September 19 to October 4.
Fulton's squad also emphasizes experience, with Harmanpreet Singh leading the team as captain. Other youngsters making their way into Fulton's plans include Arshdeep Singh, Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh, and Araijeet Singh Hundal, who has made a positive comeback from injury. This blend of youth and veterans is designed to provide the best preparation for the upcoming challenges.
Squad Composition and Key Players
The goalkeeping duties will be handled by Suraj Karkera and Pawan, ensuring reliability between the posts. The defensive unit features a mix of seasoned players and newcomers, including Amit Rohidas, Jarmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sumit, Sanjay, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, along with Lakra and Harmanpreet Singh.
In the midfield, the team boasts a combination of control and creativity. Experienced players like Rajinder Singh, Manmeet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Hardik Singh, and Nilakanta Sharma will support the youthful energy of Kujur and another first-time inclusion, Manmeet Singh of Punjab. Manmeet earned his spot after impressive performances at the Junior World Cup and with HIL GC in the Hockey India League.
The forward line is packed with talent, comprising Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Selvam Karthi, Mandeep Singh, Araijeet Singh Hundal, and Aditya Arjun Lalage, offering multiple attacking options.
Coach Fulton's Vision for the Team
Speaking on the squad selection, Craig Fulton expressed enthusiasm about the mix of youth and experience. "It's an exciting blend of young talents like Roshan, Manmeet, and Amandeep coming through, while the presence of senior players, including those from the India A setup, adds valuable experience. That balance is important for us. Belgium and Argentina are quality sides, but we believe in our abilities and are focused on delivering our best performances," Fulton stated.
This strategic approach not only prepares the team for immediate fixtures but also builds a robust foundation for future international competitions, ensuring Indian hockey remains competitive on the global stage.
