BCCI Warns IPL Teams of Stricter Action for Rule Violations

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a stern warning to Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, indicating that stricter actions could be enforced if teams continue to violate rules during the 2026 season. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board is currently reviewing protocols and may introduce stronger measures against franchises that tarnish the league's image.

Recent Controversies Involving Rajasthan Royals

The warning comes on the heels of two separate controversies involving the Rajasthan Royals this season. Team manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh after being spotted using a mobile phone near the dugout during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In a separate incident, captain Riyan Parag was fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for vaping inside the dressing room during a game against Punjab Kings.

Bhinder reportedly apologized to the BCCI anti-corruption unit, claiming that the phone usage near the dugout was accidental.

BCCI's Stance on Discipline

Saikia emphasized that maintaining discipline is not solely the responsibility of players but also of team officials and the franchises as a whole. He stated, "We are exploring some other options about how to bring the teams which are violating the norms. We will be taking some action. We are looking at the various terms and conditions and protocols of IPL [around] how the teams behave."

He further added, "It is not just players or officials. As a team, they have to maintain some decorum so that the image of the IPL is never adversely affected. To ensure that we have to take a call and we will be taking some action."

Rajasthan Royals Coach Responds

Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara also addressed the controversies, admitting that such incidents reflect poorly on the franchise. However, he insisted that the team has already dealt with the matter internally. Sangakkara said, "I think it is, of course, a reflection that is not positive on the team, a controversy of any kind. And the constant reminder to the players is to make sure they're responsible to the franchise and to our culture and our values."

The BCCI's warning underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity and image of the IPL, with potential stricter measures on the horizon for repeat offenders.
