NEW CHANDIGARH: In the IPL 2026 season, the middle overs have ceased to be as impactful as before. While death overs still provide thrilling moments, an increasing number of matches are being decided within the first six overs. The two Powerplays have thus become the most critical phase of any game.
Powerplay Dominance
Punjab Kings assistant coach Brad Haddin has observed this trend closely. “What we are witnessing is a tournament-wide trend, with most teams performing impressively in the first six overs,” he said. “It is extremely difficult to stop teams now given their aggressive approach in the Powerplay. That is why the Powerplay is becoming decisive, and many games are being decided within the two Powerplays across both innings.”
Haddin attributed this shift to the impact player rule, which allows teams to bring in an extra batter. “You have the replacement player available, so you can juggle whether that means an extra batsman, allowing your top order to go harder than they have in the past,” he explained.
Strategic Adjustments
The presence of an additional batter has changed batting intent. Risk-taking is no longer optional or a gamble; it is now an instruction. This has forced bowlers and coaches to constantly seek ways to disrupt the scoring. “From a coach’s perspective, you have to keep finding methods to slow down the scoring rate,” Haddin said. “It could be about taking wickets or getting the batsman to hit the ball in areas you want.”
Rajasthan Royals seamer Sandeep Sharma echoed the sentiment. “Powerplays are becoming so crucial that matches are often decided within those opening phases of both innings,” he said.
Tournament-Wide Phenomenon
What makes this shift particularly striking is the consistency with which teams are executing it. This is no longer limited to one or two sides redefining the tempo; it is a tournament-wide phenomenon. “The first six overs have turned into a decisive phase this tournament, with teams consistently excelling and making it tough for bowlers to respond,” Sharma added.
As the IPL 2026 season progresses, the focus on Powerplay performances is likely to intensify, with teams prioritizing explosive starts over cautious accumulation. The trend underscores the evolving dynamics of T20 cricket, where early aggression can set the tone for the entire match.
