Irfan Pathan Weighs In on IPL's Greatest Team Debate
Former India left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan has sparked fresh discussion in the cricketing world by declaring Mumbai Indians (MI) as the superior team over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing debate about the greatest franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Pathan emphasized that while both teams boast impressive records, MI's contribution to Indian cricket gives them the decisive edge.
Pathan's Rationale: MI's Legacy of Producing Match-Winners
In a detailed analysis shared on JioStar, Pathan acknowledged CSK's achievements, noting they were the first team to win back-to-back IPL titles in 2010 and 2011. However, he highlighted MI's consistent success, winning trophies in alternate years starting from 2013 and securing consecutive victories in 2019 and 2020. "What I like about MI is their contribution to Indian cricket. The number of match winners they have produced for the Indian team is absolutely tremendous," Pathan stated.
He elaborated that MI's ability to build a strong franchise and deliver results has translated into nurturing talent for the national squad. "CSK don't have four Indian captains, MI do. In that respect, assembling a team and contributing to a bigger cause, I think MI are the greatest IPL team," he added, referencing MI's role in developing leaders like Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
The Enduring Debate and Pathan's Verdict
Pathan recognized that CSK, with their five IPL trophies, will always stake a claim to greatness, making the debate fair and ongoing. "I know CSK will always say they are also the greatest, having won five trophies too. There is no doubt. There will always be a debate and it is a fair debate," he said. However, he firmly concluded that MI take the edge due to their unparalleled impact on Indian cricket, producing numerous wonderful cricketers and young talents.
Focus on Young Talent: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Crucial IPL Season
Shifting gears, Pathan also discussed the upcoming IPL 2026 season, highlighting it as a critical phase for teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The left-hander, retained by Rajasthan Royals (RR), made headlines last year by becoming the fastest Indian batter to score an IPL century in just 35 balls. His recent accolades include being Player of the Tournament and Player of the Final in the 2026 Men’s U19 World Cup, which India won.
Pathan explained that Sooryavanshi's extensive experience across formats—from domestic cricket like the Ranji Trophy with Bihar to international youth tournaments—has made him a player to watch. "This season of the IPL for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be a learning one. He has played in the tournament last year, he has played domestic cricket, and he is playing cricket in all formats everywhere," he noted.
Challenges Ahead: Opposition Bowlers Targeting Weaknesses
Pathan warned that Sooryavanshi will face increased scrutiny as bowlers study his game. "Since he has played so much cricket since his IPL debut last year, other players are watching his videos and analysing his weaknesses," he said. He urged the young batter to upgrade his game and work on these areas to maintain his momentum.
Looking ahead, Pathan expressed optimism about Sooryavanshi's potential. "This IPL season, all bowlers will be ready with their strategies and Vaibhav will be looking to prove a point. He can do that by slamming another hundred in the IPL. When he scores runs consistently this season, that is when we can say Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has upgraded his game," he concluded, underscoring the importance of consistency in high-pressure tournaments.
