NEW DELHI: While Royal Challengers Bengaluru scripted a historic turnaround in IPL 2024, winning six consecutive matches after a 1-7 start to reach the playoffs, Mumbai Indians face a similar situation in IPL 2026. However, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed little hope for the five-time champions to replicate such a comeback.
Mumbai Indians currently languish in ninth place with just two wins in eight matches, accumulating four points and a net run rate of -0.784. Their campaign has been marred by inconsistency, with both batting and bowling units failing to deliver consistently.
Ashwin's Verdict on Mumbai Indians
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin sounded dejected with Mumbai's performance this season. "I am a bit shocked. The way Mumbai Indians played in this IPL. I don't know how this happened. My mind isn't processing how this is even possible," he said.
Ashwin highlighted a troubling trend: "They gave 220 against KKR, but no other team conceded that many runs to KKR. When they bowl first, they are giving 230-240 and cannot chase those scores. Their batting lineup is struggling, their bowling attack is struggling. Where will the answer come from?"
When asked if Mumbai could win six of their remaining matches, Ashwin bluntly stated, "I don't have hope. Look at their trend. They are unable to defend or chase big totals. When they are away from home, they are yet to find answers."
Mumbai Indians' Season So Far
Mumbai Indians began IPL 2026 with a promising six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders, but consistency eluded them thereafter. Losses to Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru exposed weaknesses in both batting and bowling.
Their struggles continued with defeats to Punjab Kings and a crushing 103-run loss to Chennai Super Kings. The only bright spot came in a dominant 99-run win over Gujarat Titans, showcasing the squad's potential. However, a subsequent six-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, who chased down a massive target, highlighted their inability to compete in key moments.
With only two wins in eight matches, Mumbai Indians face an uphill task to qualify for the playoffs. The team has failed to build momentum, and their net run rate has suffered due to heavy defeats.
Can They Turn the Tide?
While RCB's 2024 turnaround remains a benchmark, Ashwin believes Mumbai Indians lack the necessary components. "Their batting and bowling are both struggling. I don't see where the answers will come from," he reiterated.
Mumbai will need to win their remaining six matches convincingly to have any chance of playoff qualification, but given their current form, it appears a daunting task. The team management may look to make strategic changes, but time is running out.
