MI's Retention Strategy: Jayawardene Reveals Tough Decisions Behind Trades
Mumbai Indians Coach Explains IPL 2026 Retention Strategy

Mumbai Indians Make Strategic Moves Ahead of IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians franchise, having made a strong comeback in IPL 2025 by reaching Qualifier 2 after returning to the playoffs, has maintained their signature approach of sticking with their core group while executing three significant trades before the retention deadline for IPL 2026.

Strategic Trades Focus on Experience

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene emphasized that experience was the driving factor behind their three major acquisitions. The team has brought in middle-order power-hitter Sherfane Rutherford, all-rounder Shardul Thakur, and leg-spinner Mayank Markande to strengthen their squad.

"They bring a wealth of experience; you need a group of guys who can handle that pressure," stated the former Sri Lanka captain. Jayawardene particularly highlighted Shardul Thakur's local Mumbai connection and familiarity with Wankhede Stadium as valuable assets, while praising Markande as "a warrior" who was previously part of their championship-winning team.

The Emotional Toll of Releasing Young Talent

Jayawardene revealed that the most challenging aspect of squad building was letting go of promising young players. The franchise released seven players from their 2025 squad: Karn Sharma, Bevon Jacobs, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Vignesh Puthur, KL Shrijith, PSN Raju, Reece Topley, and Lizaad Williams, along with the trade of Arjun Tendulkar.

"When you are a franchise, sometimes you have to get yourself emotionally detached from the decision-making process," Jayawardene explained. He personally contacted each released player to explain the reasons behind the decision, emphasizing that "these are the tough conversations but it's what franchise cricket is all about."

Building on Last Season's Success

The coach credited their return to form in IPL 2025 to the core group established after a disappointing IPL 2024 season, where they finished last amid the drama surrounding Hardik Pandya's return and promotion to captaincy.

"When we went into the auction last year, we had a vision of how we want to go in this cycle," Jayawardene said. He expressed satisfaction with how the team rallied around Hardik Pandya, noting that the captain "enjoyed that atmosphere and led the team pretty well."

With only Rs 2.75 crore remaining in their purse for the mini auction, Mumbai Indians have positioned themselves strategically. Jayawardene emphasized the importance of consistency, pointing to key players like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Tilak Varma as the foundation of their success-oriented approach.

The coach concluded by reaffirming the team's philosophy: "I have always said that I take one game at a time and only focus on the present. Our focus has always been to stay in the present and create that value chain."
