A 69-year-old man from the Gorwa area of Vadodara passed away at Kedarnath on Wednesday morning, reportedly after suffering a heart attack during his pilgrimage. The deceased, identified as Dilip Mali, had traveled to the holy site with his wife and son Hemant, who runs a travel agency in Vadodara that organizes pilgrimage tours to Kedarnath, Amarnath, and the Char Dham circuit.
According to family sources, Hemant frequently escorts groups of pilgrims to Kedarnath through his agency and had taken his parents along for the pilgrimage this year. Mali is believed to have suffered a heart attack around 7:30 am in Kedarnath.
Helicopter Arrangement Difficulties
In a video circulating on social media, Hemant is seen stating that he was trying to arrange a helicopter to transport his father's body but was facing significant difficulties. He mentioned that the district administration advised him to contact the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the necessary arrangements.
The body was later brought back to Vadodara, and the cremation was held on Thursday evening, a relative confirmed.
Pilgrimage Risks and Precautions
This tragic incident highlights the risks associated with high-altitude pilgrimages, especially for elderly individuals. Heart attacks are a known hazard due to the combination of physical exertion, low oxygen levels, and cold temperatures at sites like Kedarnath, which is situated at an altitude of over 3,500 meters. Pilgrims are advised to undergo medical check-ups before undertaking such journeys and to carry necessary medications.
The travel agency run by Hemant continues to operate, organizing tours to various religious destinations. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
