In a crucial development, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's water and sewerage committee has greenlit a substantial project to relocate a major water trunk line that currently traverses the designated area for the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave in Motera.
Strategic Pipeline Relocation for Olympic Preparations
The approved project, valued at Rs 30.68 crore, represents a critical step in Ahmedabad's comprehensive preparations for potentially hosting the 2036 Olympics. Municipal officials have confirmed that this initiative is directly linked to the city's ambitious Olympic bid, which envisions Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar as joint hosts for the prestigious global sporting event.
Sources within the administration reveal: "Comprehensive efforts are currently underway to position Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar as host cities for the 2036 Olympics. Earlier plans were formulated to establish the expansive Sardar Patel Sports Enclave across approximately 650 acres surrounding the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. Presently, a master plan for the land surrounding the stadium is being meticulously drafted."
Land Acquisition and Master Planning Progress
The master planning process incorporates lands belonging to several organizations situated near the stadium, including Bhartiya Seva Samaj, Sadashiv Pragya Mandal, and Sant Shree Asaram Ashram. The acquisition process for these lands is actively progressing as part of the comprehensive development strategy for the proposed sports enclave.
Historical Pipeline and Modern Challenges
The proposal presented to the water and sewerage committee provides historical context: "In 1986, a substantial 1,600mm diameter pipeline was installed from the army cantonment, crossing the Sabarmati River and passing through the western periphery of the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. This crucial pipeline transports purified water from the Kotarpur Waterworks to distribution stations serving the Central and West zones of Ahmedabad."
The document further explains: "At the time of its original installation, the town planning scheme was not yet implemented, resulting in the pipeline being laid through private land. Under the newly drafted TP Scheme No. 67, this existing pipeline now inconveniently passes through non-TP roads and directly through the central portion of the proposed sports enclave land."
Coordinated Infrastructure Development
To ensure future maintenance accessibility and facilitate unobstructed development of the sports enclave, authorities have determined that relocating the pipeline outside the enclave boundaries is essential. The relocation plan has been strategically timed to coincide with ongoing infrastructure projects in the area.
The proposal outlines a coordinated approach: "Currently, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited is constructing a barrage-cum-bridge on the Sabarmati River. The strategic plan involves coordinating with SRFDCL to lay the new pipeline downstream of the barrage. This synchronized approach will enable the pipeline crossing the river to be installed alongside the bridge construction, resulting in significant cost savings and eliminating the necessity to build a separate earthen embankment in the river for machinery movement."
