In a landmark achievement for Indian winter sports, alpine skier Arif Khan has delivered the nation's best-ever performance in the men's slalom event at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in Bormio. Khan secured an overall 39th-place finish, shattering a decades-old national record and marking a significant milestone in India's participation at the prestigious international competition.
Historic Finish Breaks 38-Year-Old Indian Record
Arif Khan's remarkable achievement saw him complete his two runs with a combined time of 2:41.60, earning him a top-40 finish as India concluded its campaign at the Games. This performance broke the previous Indian record set 38 years ago by Kishore Ratna Rai, who finished 49th with a time of 2:52.21 at the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics.
During the competition at the Stelvio Ski Centre, Khan demonstrated consistent improvement across his runs. In the first run, he placed 44th out of 96 participants with a time of 1:22.12. He then improved significantly in the second run, clocking 1:19.48 to secure 39th position, resulting in his final combined time of 2:41.60.
Technical Excellence in Alpine Skiing Discipline
The slalom event requires competitors to race down a steep slope while navigating a challenging zigzag course marked by closely spaced, alternating sets of poles. Khan's performance placed him 47.99 seconds behind the eventual gold medalist, Loic Meillard of Switzerland, who finished with an impressive time of 1:53.61.
This marked Arif Khan's second appearance at the Winter Olympics. At Beijing 2022, he faced challenges in the men's slalom event where he failed to finish, but he achieved a respectable 45th-place finish in the giant slalom discipline, demonstrating his growing expertise in alpine skiing.

Arif Khan was one of only two Indian athletes competing at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. The other representative, Stanzin Lundup, finished 104th in the men's 10km freestyle cross-country skiing event two days prior to Khan's historic performance.
