Rupamoni Gorh, a 26-year-old mountaineer from Assam, has created history by becoming the first woman from the state to scale Mount Everest. She achieved the feat on May 20, 2025, at 6:30 AM Nepal time, as confirmed by the expedition organizers.
Historic Achievement
Gorh, who hails from the Jorhat district, reached the summit of the world's highest peak as part of a team led by experienced mountaineers. The expedition was supported by the Assam government and various sponsors. Speaking about her achievement, Gorh said, "I am overwhelmed and proud to represent my state at the top of the world. This is a dream come true."
Challenges Overcome
The journey to the summit was fraught with challenges, including adverse weather conditions and treacherous terrain. Gorh trained rigorously for months, undergoing high-altitude training in the Himalayas and Sikkim. She also participated in several smaller expeditions to build her endurance and skills.
Gorh's success has been widely celebrated in Assam, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulating her on social media. "Rupamoni has made Assam proud. Her determination and courage are an inspiration to all, especially young women," Sarma said in a statement.
Impact on Mountaineering in Assam
This achievement is expected to boost mountaineering interest in the region. The Assam government has announced plans to establish a mountaineering institute in Jorhat to nurture young talent. Gorh's feat also highlights the growing participation of women in adventure sports in Northeast India.
Gorh, who works as a physical education teacher, plans to continue mountaineering and aims to climb other peaks, including K2 and Ama Dablam. "This is just the beginning. I want to inspire more women from rural areas to take up mountaineering," she added.
The expedition team included five other members from different states, all of whom successfully summited. The team spent nearly two months on the mountain, acclimatizing and waiting for the right weather window.
