Rupamoni Gorh: First Assamese Woman to Summit Everest with ITBP

In a historic achievement for women in adventure sports, Assam-based mountaineer Rupamoni Gorh has scripted history. On May 21, she successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest as a vital member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police’s (ITBP) first-ever all-women international expedition. With this triumph, Gorh has become the first woman from Assam to climb the world’s highest peak as part of the force's historic all-women team. This groundbreaking mission was organized by the ITBP to celebrate 'Nari Shakti' (women power) and spotlight the growing prowess of female climbers in extreme high-altitude sports.

Historic Summit: Joint National Mountaineering Team Scales Mount Everest

To celebrate the win, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrated the historic milestone on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video of Gorh proudly waving the Indian national flag at the summit. 'Assam’s daughter has reached the top of the world. Heartiest congratulations to Rupamoni Gorh for becoming the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest as part of the @ITBP_official all-women expedition team,' Sarma wrote. 'Her historic feat is a moment of immense pride for Assam and an inspiration for our youth to dream big and conquer new heights.'

According to expedition officials, the final successful push to the summit began around 8:00 AM. The team was led by Bhanita Timungpi, with Anoop Kumar serving as the climbing leader, and technical guidance provided by renowned IFMGA guide Sonam Chhiring Lama.

All About the Team

The expedition team comprised 14 members, including 11 women climbers and technical and support staff. They started their journey from New Delhi on April 19, 2026. The team planned to reach the top of the mountain via the South Col route from the Nepal side.

Gorh’s amazing climb has made many people in Assam very happy. Numerous citizens and leaders have praised her achievement as an example of determination and strength among women in the world of big mountain climbing. They view it as a testament to women’s power and resilience.
