Punjab Congress president Amrinder Warring on Wednesday dismissed an alleged audio clip purportedly containing his anti-Dalit remarks as fake, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of orchestrating a smear campaign against him. The controversy erupted after a purported audio recording surfaced on social media, in which a voice resembling Warring's could be heard making casteist slurs against the Dalit community.
Warring's Response
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Warring categorically denied the authenticity of the clip, stating that it was fabricated using artificial intelligence or deepfake technology. He claimed that the AAP, which is in power in Punjab, was behind the malicious attempt to tarnish his image and damage the Congress party's prospects in the upcoming elections.
“This is a completely fake and doctored audio. The AAP government has stooped to new lows by using technology to create false evidence against me. I have always respected all communities and have worked tirelessly for the welfare of Dalits,” Warring said.
Political Reactions
The Punjab Congress chief also demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, urging the Election Commission and the cyber crime cell to trace the origin of the clip. He further alleged that the AAP was desperate after failing to deliver on its promises and was now resorting to dirty tricks.
Meanwhile, the AAP has not officially responded to Warring's allegations. However, some party leaders have hinted that the clip should be examined by forensic experts before any conclusions are drawn.
The incident has sparked a political slugfest in Punjab, with both parties trading barbs. The Congress has accused the AAP of spreading fake news, while the AAP has questioned Warring's track record on Dalit issues.
Background
Punjab has a significant Dalit population, and caste politics often play a crucial role in the state's electoral dynamics. The Congress party has traditionally enjoyed support from Dalit voters, but the AAP has made inroads in recent years by promising social justice and welfare schemes.
As the assembly elections approach, both parties are keen to consolidate their vote banks. The controversy over the alleged audio clip is expected to intensify the war of words between the Congress and the AAP.
Warring concluded by saying, “I will not be intimidated by such tactics. The truth will prevail, and those behind this conspiracy will be exposed.”
