Three Chandigarh Teen Boxers in Asian U-17 Squad

Three teenage boxers from Chandigarh have been named in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asian U-17 Boxing Championships, scheduled to take place in Tashkent. This selection marks a significant milestone for Chandigarh boxing, highlighting the city's growing prominence in the sport.

Ranveer: A Rising Star in the 65kg Category

Fifteen-year-old Ranveer will represent India in the 65kg category. A Class 10 student, he began boxing at the age of 13 with the ambition of excelling at national and international levels. His father works as a bank recovery agent, while his mother is a homemaker. Despite his young age, Ranveer has already made a name for himself by winning gold at the School Games Nationals 2025-26.

Gurseerat Kaur: Dominating the 80+ kg Division

In the girls' section, Gurseerat Kaur has been selected to compete in the 80+ kg division. The 16-year-old Class 11 student took up boxing after the Covid-19 pandemic, when her parents enrolled her in sports to improve her fitness. What started as a fitness activity soon turned into a passion. Her mother, Navpreet Kaur, recalled her initial hesitation about the physically demanding sport. "I was afraid at first, but later accepted it because she enjoyed it," she said. Gurseerat is a sub-junior Asian champion (2024) and was honored during the August 15 celebrations at the Parade Ground. She also won gold at the School Boxing Championship in Itanagar in the U-17 category.

Ishika: Competing in the 60kg Category

Joining Gurseerat in the Indian squad is Ishika, another 15-year-old boxer who will compete in the 60kg category. A Class 11 student, Ishika began boxing at the age of 10, initially to improve her physical fitness. She has since participated in several national championships and won bronze at the 2024 Asian sub-junior event. Like Gurseerat, Ishika also won gold at the School Boxing Championship in Itanagar. Hailing from a farming family, she has received strong support from her parents. "There was no hesitation in sending her. There is no difference between girls and boys," her family stated.

With all three boxers already in Tashkent, Chandigarh will be keenly watching its young talent compete on the global stage in the Asian U-17 Boxing Championships.
