Alcaraz Defeats Rublev in Qatar, Reaches Final vs Fils

Carlos Alcaraz Edges Andrey Rublev in Tense Qatar Open Semifinal

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz showcased resilience and composure on Friday, needing six match points to finally overcome defending champion Andrey Rublev with a score of 7-6 (7/3), 6-4. This hard-fought victory secured his place in the final of the Qatar Open, marking a significant milestone in his post-Australian Open campaign.

Alcaraz's Unbeaten Run Extends to 11 Matches This Season

The match, which lasted just over two hours, saw Alcaraz extend his unbeaten streak this season to an impressive 11 matches. This tournament is his first since his historic Australian Open triumph earlier this month, where he completed his career Grand Slam. Despite some tense moments, including failing to serve out the first set twice and losing a 3-0 lead in the second, Alcaraz maintained his focus.

"The way that I am approaching every match, I'm just really proud about it," said the seven-time Grand Slam winner. "It's something I am trying to be better at and it's paying off. I'm proud of myself for getting better and maturing."

Alcaraz missed three match points while serving at 5-3 but stayed calm to clinch the win on his sixth opportunity, reaching his first final in Doha. He reflected on his mental approach, stating, "If you want to find a solution to a problem, you should find it in a calm place. It's something I am working on. In these matches, I have been really calm, thinking clearly and being positive."

Arthur Fils Returns from Injury to Reach Final

In the other semifinal, France's Arthur Fils, ranked 40th in the world, defeated sixth seed Jakub Mensik 6-4, 7-6 (7/4). This victory propels Fils into his first tour-level final since winning the Tokyo title in 2024, marking a remarkable comeback from an eight-month hiatus due to a back injury.

"It’s been a tough journey," said Fils, who is playing only his third event since returning. "Eight months without playing tennis, just watching the other guys battling... Staying in my bed and doing recovery was very long. My team knows how tough it was, but now it feels even better when I am coming back like this. To be back in a final, it means a lot."

Fils has recently added former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic to his coaching team, bolstering his preparations. Although he has lost both previous matches against Alcaraz, which were played on clay, Fils remains optimistic about his chances in the final.

"If you believe, then maybe you can do it, so I believe 100 per cent," Fils asserted. "Let's see tomorrow on the court but for sure I am coming on court to fight."

Key Context and Tournament Highlights

  • Alcaraz's path to the final included a three-set victory over former champion Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.
  • Mensik, Fils' semifinal opponent, had earlier shocked world No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals, adding to the tournament's competitive intensity.
  • This final sets up a compelling clash between Alcaraz's current form and Fils' inspirational return from injury.

The Qatar Open final promises to be a thrilling encounter, with Alcaraz aiming to continue his dominant season and Fils seeking to cap his comeback with a title win. Both players have demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude and skill throughout the tournament, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion.
