Actress Anushka Sharma has ignited a fierce debate on social media after she shared a video on her Instagram Story endorsing homeopathy. The video featured Shark Tank judge and entrepreneur Namita Thapar in conversation with homeopathic physician Rajan Sankaran. The post quickly drew a sharp reaction from Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known online as The Liver Doc, who labeled homeopathy as 'witchcraft' and 'fancy sugar pills'.
The Liver Doc's Reaction
The Liver Doc, a hepatologist known for his outspoken views against pseudoscience, took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the actress. In a series of posts, he described homeopathy as 'medicine made of water, alcohol, and sugar' and accused Anushka of promoting 'unscientific fraud medicine'. He wrote, 'So you're paying premium prices for fancy sugar pills containing precisely no medicine at all.' He also shared a screenshot of Anushka's story and called it part of a 'triangle of shame' involving supplement sellers, legalized quacks, and illiterate celebrities.
Social Media Backlash
The controversy escalated as many users joined the debate. Some criticized Anushka for promoting homeopathy while having access to the best medical care in London. One user wrote, 'She and her husband live in London, getting the best treatment there but look at the hypocrisy.' Another user, Dr. Jaison Philip, called her an 'idiot' for promoting pseudoscience that 'contributes to death of humans'. A third user compared her endorsement to fraud babas, saying, 'Fraud babas are not enough, she is now promoting unscientific fraud medicine to Indians.'
On the other hand, supporters of homeopathy defended the actress, arguing that homeopathy has helped many people. However, the scientific community largely dismisses homeopathy as a placebo with no proven efficacy beyond that of a sugar pill.
Background of the Controversy
The debate is not new. Homeopathy has long been a subject of controversy, with proponents claiming it works on the principle of 'like cures like' and opponents pointing to lack of scientific evidence. The Liver Doc has been a vocal critic, often calling out celebrities and influencers for promoting alternative medicine. In this case, Anushka's large following amplified the message, leading to widespread discussion.
Anushka Sharma, who is married to cricketer Virat Kohli, has not responded to the criticism. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between traditional and alternative medicine in India, where homeopathy is officially recognized alongside other systems like Ayurveda and Unani.
