A tragic fire incident at an elderly care home in Sri Lanka has claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left seven others injured, police confirmed on Thursday.

The blaze broke out at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday at the Mawpiya Sevana Elderly Care Home located in Anguruwatota, around 65 kilometers southeast of Colombo, in the Kalutara district. Police reported that 10 residents were found dead at the scene, while one more person succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Horana Base Hospital.
Rescue and Response
A total of 51 residents were successfully rescued from the facility. The fire was extinguished with the help of residents and local police. Seven injured individuals remain hospitalized for treatment. According to the news portal newsfirst.lk, the rescued residents have been temporarily accommodated at a nearby school, and authorities are making arrangements to relocate them to a safer facility.
