Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the 2026 French Open at Roland Garros, citing a recurring elbow injury. The Spanish tennis star, who won his third Grand Slam title in Paris last year, has been struggling with the injury since the start of the clay-court season.
Alcaraz's Injury Woes
Alcaraz, currently ranked world number two, had been receiving treatment for his right elbow but decided to pull out after medical advice. In a statement, he said: "It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from Roland Garros this year. I have tried everything to be ready, but my elbow is not responding well. I need to listen to my body and prioritize my long-term health."
Impact on the Tournament
With Alcaraz out, world number one Jannik Sinner will enter as the top seed. The Italian, who has been in stellar form this season, is now the overwhelming favorite to win his first French Open title. Sinner has won two Masters 1000 events on clay this year and has a strong record at Roland Garros, having reached the semifinals in 2024 and 2025.
Other top contenders include Novak Djokovic, who is seeking his fourth French Open title, and rising star Holger Rune. The draw is expected to be reshuffled following Alcaraz's withdrawal.
Alcaraz's Season So Far
The 23-year-old has had a mixed 2026 season. He won the Australian Open in January but has struggled with injuries since then. He missed the Monte Carlo Masters and withdrew from the Madrid Open after just one match. His last appearance was at the Italian Open, where he lost in the quarterfinals to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Looking Ahead
Alcaraz is expected to return for the grass-court season, with Wimbledon and the US Open still on his calendar. His team has stated that the withdrawal is precautionary and that he should be fully fit for the summer swing. Fans will be hoping to see the Spanish sensation back on court soon.
The 2026 French Open is scheduled to begin on May 25 at Roland Garros in Paris.
