France head coach Didier Deschamps has dismissed any notion of revenge as his side prepares to face Senegal in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match revives memories of Senegal's 1-0 victory over France in the 2002 World Cup opener, which contributed to France's shocking group-stage exit as defending champions.
Deschamps on Revenge
Speaking ahead of the match in New Jersey, Deschamps stated, "Listen, this was history, but even N'Golo Kante, I am not sure he saw the game. Nearly all of my players were not born in 2002. I know that you like this word 'revenge', but there is no revenge in football."
France's World Cup Journey
France, winners in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, begin their campaign against a Senegal side that reached the round of 16 in 2022 and the quarterfinals in 2002. Led by Kylian Mbappe, France faces scrutiny after Mbappe failed to score in warm-up friendlies against Ivory Coast and Northern Ireland.
Senegal's Strengths
Deschamps praised Senegal, saying, "They have excellent players who play in the best clubs. They have an offensive capacity, their midfield is excellent. When you are part of the best teams, you have got everything."
Kante's Return
N'Golo Kante, a key figure in France's 2018 World Cup win, returns after missing the 2022 edition due to injury. He expects a tough midfield battle against Senegal. "We want to be part of this squad and to have everyone on board. I believe it is important to have trust in our team. We need to go as far as possible in the competition. Of course, our main opponent is ourselves. We need to stay together, concentrated," Kante said.
The match takes place on Wednesday at New Jersey, with France aiming to secure a strong start in their quest for a third World Cup title.
