Germany's Shock Exit at the Hands of Paraguay
Germany's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay, the 2010 quarterfinalists. The match went to penalties after a controversial VAR decision denied Germany a goal that would have sealed the win. Paraguay prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, marking another early exit for the four-time world champions.
Post-2014 Title Struggles Continue
Since winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Argentina, Germany has failed to replicate that success on the biggest stage. According to ESPN, their performances in major tournaments have been consistently underwhelming:
- Euro 2016: Semifinal exit with a 2-0 loss to France.
- 2018 FIFA World Cup: Group stage exit, finishing bottom after losses to Sweden and South Korea, with only one win.
- Euro 2020: Round of 16 exit with a 2-0 loss to England.
- 2022 FIFA World Cup: Another group stage exit, decided on goal difference, including a loss to Japan, a win, and a draw.
- Euro 2024: Quarterfinal finish with a 2-1 loss to eventual champions Spain.
- UEFA Nations League: Never won the title; best finish was fourth place in the 2024-25 edition.
The Persistent Clean Sheet Problem
Germany's defensive frailties have been a recurring issue. They have conceded in each of their last 10 FIFA World Cup matches, their worst-ever run without a clean sheet in the tournament's history. The last time they kept a clean sheet was in the 2014 World Cup final, a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who came out of international retirement after a strong season with Bayern Munich, struggled to make a significant impact. Even against tournament debutants Curacao, Germany conceded an early equalizer before winning 7-1. In other matches, they trailed early against Ivory Coast and lost 2-1 to Ecuador despite taking an early lead through Leroy Sane.
A Rare Penalty Shootout Setback
According to OptaJoe, Germany's penalty shootout loss to Paraguay was only their second defeat in such a situation at a major international tournament. The first came against Czechoslovakia in the 1976 UEFA European Championship final, which ended 5-3 on penalties.
The result is considered one of the biggest knockout upsets in modern World Cup history. Germany entered the tournament ranked 10th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Paraguay were 41st, a gap of 31 places.
