NHL 2027 All-Star Weekend Overhaul: Country vs Country Format Revealed
NHL 2027 All-Star Weekend Goes International

The National Hockey League has announced a complete overhaul of its 2027 All-Star Weekend, moving away from the traditional divisional format to a country-versus-country tournament. The event is scheduled for February 5-6 at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and directly reflects the growing appetite for international hockey following the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off.

New Tournament Format

Five teams will compete in the revamped All-Star Weekend: Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, and a "World" squad composed of players from all other nations. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that Russian players will be eligible for the World team, a significant detail given the current uncertainties surrounding their participation in other international events.

How the Competition Works

Each roster will consist of nine skaters and two goaltenders. The teams will compete in a 3-on-3 round-robin format, with each team playing four five-minute games. Teams earn two points for a win, one point for a tie, and no points for a loss. The top two teams after the round-robin will advance to a 10-minute championship final, with the winning team splitting a $2 million prize.

Fan Voting and Selection Process

Fan voting will open in December. The NHL and NHL Players' Association will present 30 players per team, and fans will select eight from each. The league and union will jointly fill the remaining three spots on each roster.

Commissioner Gary Bettman framed the format shift as a carefully considered move. "We're extremely excited to bring this event to New York. We think the format we've created will be fun. It'll be entertaining. It'll be great for the players and the fans," he said during his state of the league address before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh placed the changes in a broader context. "Four Nations was a kind of a prelude into the Olympics. This All-Star Weekend can be a prelude to the World Cup of Hockey in the following year," Walsh said.

Skills Competition Gets a Youth Focus

The NHL All-Star Skills Competition is also receiving a fresh identity. Ten players aged 25 or younger, selected jointly by the NHL and NHLPA, will compete in four of six possible events: fastest skater, hardest shot, passing challenge, one timers, stick handling, and accuracy shooting. The top four scorers will advance to a shootout round against All-Star goaltenders. From there, the top two will face off in an obstacle course finale, with a $1 million prize going to the winner.

This deliberate move aims to put the next generation front and center, giving younger fans a reason to connect with players who are still building their names.

Historical Significance for the Islanders

For the New York Islanders, this marks the first time they have hosted All-Star festivities since 1983, when the franchise was at the height of its dynasty run.

Broadcast Information

ESPN will carry the skills event on February 5, with ABC and Sportsnet broadcasting the main game on February 6.
