Emma Raducanu Pushes Wimbledon to Enhance Tournament Experience
British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has publicly encouraged Wimbledon organizers to look toward the Australian Open for inspiration. She believes implementing similar improvements could significantly boost the overall experience for everyone attending the historic tournament.
Practice Court Accessibility Needs Reform
Raducanu specifically highlighted issues with practice court arrangements at Wimbledon. She pointed out that access to quality practice times and courts heavily depends on a player's ranking. This creates what she describes as a clear hierarchy.
"You definitely sense a hierarchy on practice times, that's the big one," Raducanu stated. "Practice courts, that's another one. You have to work your way up there to get the good slots and good courts."
The current system requires players to constantly compete for optimal practice conditions. While Raducanu acknowledged that being seeded helped her secure better slots, she emphasized the struggle lower-ranked players face.
"It is quite dependent on your ranking," she explained. "It's not as favourable as people might think it is, but you have to fight for your good court times."
Australian Open Crowd Energy Praised
Raducanu also contrasted the atmosphere at different Grand Slam events. She expressed particular appreciation for the vibrant crowds at the Australian Open.
"I think the crowd is definitely quite vocal and rowdy in a good way, which I love," she said. "They get into it."
The British number one admitted that facing local players in Australia presents a unique challenge. The enthusiastic home support creates an intimidating environment for opponents.
"It is very difficult playing an Aussie," Raducanu noted, recalling her experience in Hobart. "I played one in Hobart and it was a much smaller tournament, so here it must be difficult."
Space Utilization Could Transform Wimbledon
Raducanu suggested that Wimbledon could make better use of its available space. She believes expanded facilities would benefit both players and spectators.
"I think that the extra space would be really, really beneficial for the tournament," she remarked. "I think they could do much more, and it would be really fun."
The 23-year-old athlete remains hopeful that Wimbledon will consider these suggestions. She wants her home Grand Slam to evolve while maintaining its prestigious character.
