Randhir Singh, a veteran sports administrator and multiple Asian Games medallist, passed away on Saturday at the age of 78. He was a prominent figure in Indian sports, having served as the Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Early Life and Athletic Career
Born on September 18, 1946, in Patiala, Punjab, Randhir Singh hailed from a family with a rich sporting legacy. His father, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, was a former Test cricketer and a member of the IOC. Randhir Singh made his mark as a shooter, winning multiple medals at the Asian Games. He clinched gold in the trap event at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games and added a silver in the same event at the 1970 Bangkok Games. He also won a bronze in the trap team event at the 1974 Tehran Asian Games.
Administrative Roles
After retiring from competitive shooting, Randhir Singh transitioned into sports administration. He served as the Secretary General of the IOA for several terms and was also the President of the Indian Shooting Federation. His administrative acumen earned him a place in the IOC, where he contributed to various commissions. He was also a member of the Asian Games Federation and the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Honours and Recognition
In recognition of his contributions to sports, Randhir Singh was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1971 and the Padma Shri in 1974. He was also honoured with the Olympic Order in 1996 for his services to the Olympic movement.

Randhir Singh's passing marks the end of an era in Indian sports administration. He was known for his integrity, dedication, and vision for developing sports in India. Tributes poured in from across the sporting world, with IOA President PT Usha calling him a "pillar of Indian sports." The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) expressed deep sorrow, stating that his contributions to shooting sports were invaluable.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son. His funeral will be held with full state honours in Patiala.
