Former England captain Bryan Robson has voiced strong support for Harry Maguire, stating that the defender should have been selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. Robson believes Maguire's physical strength and presence make him the ideal player to neutralize Norway's prolific striker Erling Haaland in the upcoming quarter-final clash.
Robson's confidence in Maguire
Speaking to Hajper via Goal.com, Robson emphasized that England's current centre-backs lack the power to match Haaland. "The Norway game is why I would have loved to have seen Harry Maguire in Thomas Tuchel's squad this summer because I think Harry Maguire would deal with Erling Haaland," Robson said.
He added, "The other lads we have are quick, but they're as strong as someone like Maguire, and Haaland is going to be right up for this game, and he's going to use his strength and other qualities to go to another level because it's the World Cup. It's going to be a tough game for England's two centre-halves. Harry Maguire would have been the best man for the job."
Haaland's World Cup form
Haaland has been one of the standout performers in the tournament, scoring seven goals so far. Only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have more, with eight goals each. His physicality and finishing ability have been key to Norway's historic run to the quarter-finals.
England's path to quarter-finals
England reached the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16, despite playing much of the second half with 10 men. Jude Bellingham scored twice, and Harry Kane converted a decisive penalty to secure the win. This marks the 11th time England has reached the World Cup quarter-finals.
Norway's historic achievement
Norway created history by defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, with Haaland scoring both goals. This is the first time Norway has advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals, setting up a highly anticipated showdown with England.
Upcoming quarter-final clash
England and Norway will face off at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Saturday (local time) in one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. Robson's comments highlight the defensive challenge England faces against Haaland, who is expected to be a major threat.
