Sonowal Reviews Progress of Multi-Sports Complex in Dibrugarh
Union Minister and Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday conducted a review of the multi-disciplinary sports complex under construction at Khanikar in Dibrugarh. This facility is poised to become Assam's largest multi-sport stadium upon completion. During his visit, Sonowal inspected various infrastructural elements of the project and provided guidance and recommendations for its further advancement.
The Union Minister, who had laid the foundation stone of the ambitious project on March 1, 2019, during his tenure as Chief Minister, expressed profound satisfaction in witnessing the stadium gradually take shape over the years. The inspection held particular significance for Sonowal, as the project embodies a vision he championed more than seven years ago.
“I firmly believe that this sports infrastructure, equipped with modern facilities, will open up new horizons for the sports world in Dibrugarh district and across upper Assam. This stadium will prove to be a milestone in developing the sports talent of our youth,” Sonowal stated during his visit.
Phase-1 and Phase-2 Details
The complex, constructed across 104 bighas of land adjacent to the Dibrugarh City Bypass at a cost of Rs 233 crore, currently accommodates approximately 5,000 spectators. Phase-1 of the project was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 30, 2026. Phase-2, sanctioned at Rs 209 crore, will expand the seating capacity to 35,000, firmly establishing it as the largest multi-sports stadium in Assam.
“This stadium is going to be the largest multi-sports stadium in Assam. The expansion work will transform Dibrugarh into a world-class sporting destination for athletes across the northeast and beyond,” Sonowal added.
Existing Infrastructure
The Phase-1 facility already boasts an impressive array of infrastructure, including an indoor stadium, a swimming pool complex, a football playground, a synthetic athletic track, courts for lawn tennis, volleyball, and badminton, along with residential hostels for athletes, a VIP block, and other world-class amenities built to international standards.
The project has been a cornerstone of the BJP government's broader vision for Dibrugarh's development. In 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to upgrade the complex to its 35,000-capacity version, reinforcing the state government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure in upper Assam.
Potential for International Events
Officials accompanying Sonowal during the inspection noted that the facility has the potential to host not only national-level competitions but also international sporting events. Such events could significantly boost tourism and the regional economy.
The sports complex is part of a wider development push in Dibrugarh, which is being elevated to serve as Assam's second capital. Alongside the sports complex, a second legislative assembly complex—whose foundation was also laid by Amit Shah in January—is under construction at a cost of Rs 284 crore, further cementing the city's growing administrative and sporting stature.
