Zeeshan Ansari named in India 'A' squad for Sri Lanka series

Lucknow leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari has earned a call-up to the India 'A' squad for the 2026 multi-day series in Sri Lanka, a significant milestone in his red-ball progression. The selection comes after a subdued Indian Premier League (IPL) season where he found limited opportunities.

IPL Journey and Domestic Performances

Ansari made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2025 after an impressive showing in the inaugural UP T20 League, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps in 12 matches at an economy rate of 7.60. He followed that with six wickets in 10 matches during his debut IPL season. However, in IPL 2026, he struggled for game time and remained on the bench throughout the season as SRH finished third in the league phase.

Despite the IPL setback, Ansari had a stellar run in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, claiming 21 wickets in eight matches at an average of 16.52. In first-class cricket for Uttar Pradesh, he has taken 17 wickets in five matches. He also performed well in the UP T20 League 2025, finishing with 15 wickets in 13 matches.

Net Bowler Role and Guidance

Following his IPL season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) roped in Ansari as a net bowler for the Test match between India and Afghanistan. He impressed during training sessions. "I am happy to hear the news. Currently, I am with the Indian team as a net bowler. I have come for Ghaziabad Premier League where I will play 2-3 matches. Then, I will move to Lucknow for practice session and play multi-day matches, and later join India camp," Ansari said.

He credited India bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule for guidance on red-ball bowling. "He guided me about red ball, and how to deliver in the right areas," Ansari added.

Coach's Reaction

His coach Gopal Singh expressed pride in the achievement. "I am happy for Zeeshan. He is deserving and it's a proud moment for us," Singh said.
