Apple has launched sleep apnea detection on Apple Watch in India, a feature that uses breathing disturbances to alert users of potential health risks. The feature, which received FDA approval before the Watch Series 10 launch in September 2024, is now available to Indian users alongside hearing health tracking for AirPods Pro (2nd and 3rd generation).
How Sleep Apnea Detection Works
The Apple Watch utilizes its accelerometer to monitor wrist movements that are linked to breathing disturbances. Over a 30-day period, the device analyzes this data to identify patterns consistent with moderate to severe sleep apnea. Users must wear the watch for at least 10 nights within that 30-day window to receive a notification if signs of sleep apnea are detected.
Health Risks of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that increases vulnerability to coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke. The risks are higher for older individuals, making early detection crucial. By providing alerts, the Apple Watch aims to help users seek medical advice promptly.
Availability and Requirements
The feature is now available in India. To use it, users need an Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2. The watch must be worn during sleep for at least 10 nights over a 30-day period to generate a notification. The feature is designed to work seamlessly in the background, requiring no user intervention beyond wearing the device.
This launch underscores Apple's commitment to expanding health monitoring capabilities in its devices, offering users valuable insights into their well-being. The sleep apnea detection feature joins a suite of health tools available on Apple Watch, including heart rate monitoring, ECG, and blood oxygen sensing.
