BMTC issued a clarification on Sunday after a salary 'glitch' resulted in an excess arrears payout for 100 conductors. Due to a data entry error by a billing clerk, these conductors were mistakenly credited with the full 26-month arrears amount instead of the scheduled 11-month first instalment.
Details of the Error
The error occurred during the processing of arrears payments for employees. A billing clerk inadvertently entered the total arrears amount for 26 months, rather than the planned first instalment covering 11 months. As a result, 100 conductors received a significantly higher payout than intended.
BMTC's Response
BMTC officials confirmed that the mistake was identified promptly and steps are being taken to rectify the situation. The corporation has assured that the excess amount will be adjusted from future payments to the affected employees. A statement from BMTC emphasized that this was a technical error and not a systemic issue.
“We have identified the data entry error that led to the excess payout. The affected conductors will not face any penalty, and the excess amount will be recovered through deductions in upcoming salary cycles,” a BMTC spokesperson said.
Impact on Employees
The conductors who received the excess payment were initially surprised by the higher amount. However, BMTC has communicated with them to explain the error and the recovery process. The corporation has urged employees to cooperate in the adjustment process.
Preventive Measures
To avoid such errors in the future, BMTC plans to implement additional verification steps in the payroll system. This includes cross-checking data entries by a second official before processing payments. The corporation also aims to upgrade its software to reduce manual errors.
This incident highlights the need for robust data management practices in public sector organizations. BMTC's swift action in clarifying the situation and outlining corrective measures has been appreciated by employee unions, who have called for improved system checks.
