State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a satellite phone priced at Rs 1,34,166, specifically engineered for defence personnel, disaster response teams, and adventure travellers. The device ensures seamless communication in areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable, such as dense forests, high-altitude regions, and oceanic zones.
Key Features and Specifications
The satellite phone supports both voice calls and SMS services via geostationary satellites. It operates on the Thuraya satellite network, which covers over 140 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The handset is ruggedized with an IP67 rating, making it dustproof and waterproof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It also includes a built-in GPS for location tracking and an SOS button for emergencies. The battery offers up to 80 hours of standby time and 6 hours of talk time.

BSNL has set the price at Rs 1,34,166, which includes the handset and a SIM card. Customers can purchase the device from select BSNL offices and authorized retailers. The company also offers prepaid and postpaid plans starting from Rs 999 for 30 days with 30 minutes of talk time. For heavy users, a plan of Rs 2,499 provides 120 minutes and 120 SMS messages for 30 days.

The primary users are expected to be defence forces operating in border areas, disaster management agencies responding to earthquakes, floods, or cyclones, and adventure enthusiasts trekking in remote mountains or deserts.
