Hubballi: Sales of bicycles dipped after the Covid pandemic in Hubballi, as high-end bicycles, considered a secondary essential commodity, saw limited demand. However, over the past two years, people have increasingly begun buying e-bicycles, while geared bicycles are especially in demand among children. Adults, too, are purchasing bicycles as part of their fitness routines and healthy lifestyles.

Manish Shah, a member of the Karnataka Bicycle Dealers Association, told TOI that the pandemic posed multiple challenges to the bicycle industry. “Retailers were the worst hit. In 2023-24, there was growth, but only a marginal rise of 4-5% was recorded in 2024-25. In 2025-26, growth was on a par with the previous year. However, we have seen a 10% rise in bicycle sales in April and May this year compared to the same period last year. This growth is significant as it has occurred amid the West Asia crisis, which has led to price hikes and supply disruptions. School vacations may be one reason, and the trend shows customers are returning to bicycles in the post-pandemic period,” he said.
Asked whether fuel price hikes are boosting bicycle sales, he said it is not reflected in current trends. “However, we expect the future outlook to be brighter, as people may shift to bicycles if disruptions in fuel supply continue,” he added.
Cycling Culture
Anand Baid, a founder member of the Hubballi Bicycle Club, said cycling is gaining popularity among youth and middle-aged people. “Recently, 40 youths cycled from Hubballi to Kanyakumari. Last Sunday, 30 teams of three members each started from different locations and converged at Tolanakere in Hubballi after riding 50km. We are planning a three-day expedition to Maharashtra in October. We are organising Cyclotsava this Sunday from SDM Medical College to IIIT, followed by two-hour sessions,” he said.
However, many cyclists in the twin cities point out that dusty roads, speeding vehicles and a lack of respect for cyclists remain major hurdles to using bicycles for daily commuting.
