The chairman of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), M Maheshwar Rao, has instructed officials to develop a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based portal for civic works. This initiative aims to streamline coordination among various departments and enable the effective and simultaneous execution of projects across the city.
Enhancing Coordination Through Technology
Rao emphasized that the GIS portal will serve as a centralized platform for monitoring and managing civic infrastructure projects. By integrating spatial data, the system will allow departments to plan and implement works without conflicts, reducing delays and resource wastage.
Key Features of the Portal
- Real-time tracking of ongoing civic works
- Mapping of underground utilities to avoid damage during excavation
- Integration with multiple department databases for seamless data sharing
- Public access to project timelines and progress reports
The directive comes as part of the GBA’s broader effort to leverage technology for urban governance. Officials have been asked to submit a detailed project report within a month, outlining the technical specifications and implementation roadmap.
Expected Impact on Bengaluru's Infrastructure
With rapid urbanization, Bengaluru faces challenges in coordinating road repairs, water supply lines, and sewage networks. The GIS portal is expected to minimize instances where newly laid roads are dug up for utility works, a common complaint among residents. Rao stated that the system will prioritize work sequencing and resource allocation.
The development aligns with the state government's Smart City initiatives, aiming to make Bengaluru a model for data-driven urban management. Further updates on the portal's rollout are awaited.
