Google's Gemini chatbot has received a significant upgrade that enhances its utility for users. Starting April 29, 2026, Gemini users can now create and download files in various formats directly from the chat interface, eliminating the need for copy-pasting. The supported formats include PDFs, Word documents, Excel sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, CSVs, LaTeX, RTF, TXT, and Markdown.
Simplified Workflow
The new feature streamlines the process: users simply describe what they need, hit the export button, and select their desired format. For instance, a budget brainstorm can be transformed into an .xlsx file, and lecture notes can be packaged into a LaTeX-formatted PDF with diagrams. This update removes the friction of manually copying and formatting content.
Current Limitations
Despite the upgrade, there is no direct export option for PowerPoint. However, users can still convert Google Slides to .pptx format as a workaround. Some Reddit users have reported occasional crashes on the web app, suggesting that the rollout may still be undergoing refinements.
Market Context
It is worth noting that Claude, another AI chatbot, has offered file generation capabilities including Excel since September 2024. Nevertheless, this update marks a significant improvement for Gemini's large user base. The feature is being rolled out globally to all Gemini users, including individual Workspace accounts.
