Google has simplified identity verification for users in India by allowing them to save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly in Google Wallet. This eliminates the need to carry a physical Aadhaar card or log into portals while standing in queues.
Rollout and Partnership
The feature is part of Google's ongoing collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It brings Aadhaar into the same digital wallet already used for boarding passes and bank cards, enhancing convenience and security.
Security and Privacy
The Aadhaar credential is stored encrypted on the device, not on the Google Account, ensuring user privacy. A feature called selective disclosure allows users to share only the specific details required by a verifier. For instance, if a cinema checks your age, they will not see your full Aadhaar data.
Initial Partners
The first wave of partners includes PVR INOX for movie tickets, BharatMatrimony for matrimonial trust verification, and Atlys for international visa paperwork. Mygate and Snabbit will soon join, enabling verification at apartment gates and local service providers.
How to Add Aadhaar to Google Wallet
To add your Aadhaar, you need an Android 9 or higher phone with a screen lock enabled and the official Aadhaar app installed. Follow these steps:
- Open the Aadhaar app, sign in, verify your identity, tap Add to Wallet, and select Google Wallet.
- Alternatively, open Google Wallet, tap +, select Aadhaar, and you will be redirected to the Aadhaar app to complete verification.
If you see a "Reviewing your request" message, the system is cross-checking your details. You will be notified once the process is complete.
Usage
Once added, you can use the credential in person via NFC or QR code, or remotely for online services.
Global Expansion
Alongside the India launch, Google is rolling out its passport-based ID pass feature to Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil.
